PAVE MORE MILES IN LESS TIME

Pave More Miles in Less Time Header

The longer a street repaving process takes, the more opportunities there are for problems. Changes in weather, more opportunities for traffic accidents and more time you have to spend listening to angry messages about traffic delays. That's not fun for anyone. The Hot In-Place Recycling process reduces a lot of culprits that contribute to extended asphalt repaving processes and delays.

While the traditional mill and fill is the right choice for many jobs, it does have its drawbacks. Here's what the process looks like:

ISSUES WITH MILL AND FILL

We won't argue that this isn't an effective process for removing cracked and damaged asphalt and replacing it with a smooth, drivable surface. The difference is that it's not a very efficient process. Here's where they lose the most time:

TIME SUCK 1: TRUCKING

All of the trucking trips and coordination takes time. Maneuvering trucks through traffic, getting them returned and AdobeStock_30012445coordinating this process is no easy feat.

TIME SUCK 2: ASPHALT REPLACEMENT

Because they're using entirely new asphalt in the process, it takes considerably more time to mill the old asphalt off, haul it away, place the new asphalt and compact it.

TIME SUCK 3: FUTURE ISSUES

Since we're just fixing the symptom of the problem and not the disease, this process has to be repeated (to some degree) more often. Even if it's just repairing reflective cracks without the full milling process, it's more time spent overall fixing the road.

Hot In-Place Recycling is a process that was developed for speed. The process is completed start-to-finish with a single pass, making it much faster for everyone involved.
HERE ARE THE TIME BONUSES FOR HOT IN-PLACE RECYCLING:

1. ALL (OR MOST) TRUCKING IS ELIMINATED

Because HIR reuses 100% of the existing pavement, the only trucking involved depends on what the agency chooses to put on top. A hotmix overlay afterwards would require some trucking. However, many choose surface treatments such as microsurfacing or chip seal, which are essentially truckless.

2. FEWER STEPS

Hot In-Place Recycling rejuvenates the asphalt where it lies, meaning there are fewer steps to completion. The stage between asphalt removal and replacement in a mill and fill can sometimes take days depending on weather disruptions and holidays or weekends. Hot In-Place Recycling is completed on a stretch of road in a single pass with no breaks, and we eliminate the entire step of the tack coat.

3. PREVENTING REFLECTIVE CRACKS

Nothing eats time like dealing with the same problem areas repeatedly. The heat from the pre-heater and the heater scarifier don’t just impact the asphalt to the specified depth. This is significant because reflective cracks surface from below the top layer of asphalt. Hot In-Place Recycling helps recondition that material to re-activate the existing oil, retard those cracks and increase the life-cycle of the asphalt.

SPEED AND SAVINGS

The less time an asphalt resurfacing project takes, the less the public has to notice the inconvenience, the weather has to disrupt your best-laid plans and cars or roads have to be damaged.  This is good for efficiency, cost and public perception, all objectives of a successful road resurfacing.
